Farewell and Good Luck to Conor McNeil

Thursday 15 May marked our final Task Force morning with Conor McNeil, our brilliant National Trust Ranger for the past couple of years. Conor is heading off for new adventures up north, and we celebrated with a well-earned BBQ, cake, and a fond farewell on Limpsfield Common.

Conor has been a passionate and dedicated presence here—always generous with his time and knowledge, especially following the loss of his mentor and friend, Jeremy Saunders. His energy and commitment to conservation have made a lasting impact on the Task Force and the wider Friends of Limpsfield Common community.

Now, Conor is setting off to pursue an MSc in Nature Recovery, Restoration & Rewilding at the University of Manchester, while continuing his inspiring work with the rewilding charity, Youngwilders.

A local lad, Conor grew up on Nutfield Marsh and attended Hawthorns and Caterham School before studying Environmental Science at Plymouth University. He went on to work as a groundsman and kitchen gardener at The Pig at the South Downs Hotel, later joining the National Trust as a volunteer ranger at Box Hill, before applying for the ranger job for Limpsfield Common.

Beyond his ranger duties, Conor is a true nature enthusiast. He spends his spare time foraging, gardening, beekeeping, and helping to maintain his family’s homestead.

He’s also a talented nature poet and continues to support Youngwilders, helping to manage their main site in West Surrey and to run their flagship event at Knepp Estate, which brings together young nature lovers from all walks of life.

Thank you Conor for all your hard work and enthusiasm and good luck in your new adventures. We will really miss you, but hope you’ll visit us from time to time! 🌳
