St Mary’s Primary School visit to the Air Raid Shelters

In one of our roles as custodians of the Air Raid Shelters at Grub Street, we had a lovely time today giving a talk to the children of St Mary’s Year 6 who are learning all about World War II for one of their History modules.

The children were brilliant and asked really good questions. So well behaved and a credit to St Mary’s School.

Sarah Lewis, head of St Mary’s and Limpsfield CofE Infants said: “It’s great that the children get to learn about the local history of WWII, and what happened in their own communities, and they loved hearing what it was like for the school children to shelter in the bunkers during air raids… “

They were particularly interested in what happened with the toilet buckets!!! Some things don’t change over the decades and generations!

Thanks so much to our fabulous volunteers and the National Trust. And particularly to Peter Wade for his brilliant replica anti aircraft gun.
