Looking for a wholesome half term adventure? Even in February, Limpsfield Common is bursting with quiet woodland magic – you just need to slow down and tune in. How about printing off one of our scavenger hunt sheets to enjoy spotting wildlife with your family…
🦊 Wildlife to Spot this February Half Term
With the trees still bare, it’s a wonderful time for wildlife watching. Keep an eye out for:
- Foxes weaving through the undergrowth
- Busy squirrels chasing through the canopy – and if you’re very lucky, you might spot the Chart’s rare white squirrel
- Blue tits and flocks of long-tailed tits
- Tiny firecrests flickering through evergreens
- A nuthatch creeping up a tree trunk
- Jays and magpies flashing bold colours between branches
- Red kites soaring high overhead
On grey, still days you may even hear the gentle hoot of an owl echoing through the woodland.
🐑 Signs of Early Spring
Look out for catkins forming on hazel branches – one of the first signs that spring is on its way.
Down at Yalden Spring, frogs and toads are beginning to spawn – a fascinating sight for children and adults alike (please enjoy from a respectful distance).
And in the fields near Ridlands Grove, you may spot some early lambs – a lovely reminder that the seasons are slowly turning.
🦉 Woodland Homes
Around Ridlands Grove you’ll notice owl houses, bat boxes and bird nesting boxes tucked high in the trees, quietly supporting the Common’s thriving ecosystem.

A Gentle Reminder 💚
Limpsfield Common is a shared and much-loved space. To help protect its wildlife and keep everyone safe and happy this half term:
- Please keep dogs under close control and use leads where appropriate, especially near livestock and ponds.
- Always clear up after your dog.
- Please keep dogs and children out of the ponds, and do not throw sticks, logs or other objects into the water – it harms delicate pond life and spawning amphibians.
- Encourage children to enjoy exploring without disturbing habitats.
Thank you for helping us care for this special place.
