Respecting the rules on Limpsfield Common (open access land) to help preserve the area for future generations

Limpsfield Common (owned by the National Trust) is commons land, aka open access land, on which the “right to roam” applies. Right to roam includes activities such as walking, running, watching wildlife and climbing, but other activities may not be allowed or may require permission.

Below is a run-down of the various rules that apply to Limpsfield Common and how you can help us to preserve this wonderful place for generations to come…

Whilst we want to see locals and visitors enjoying Commons land, there are certain activities you cannot usually do on open access land, without permission from the landowner, e.g.:

  • horse-riding (allowed on Limpsfield Common*)
  • cycling (allowed on Limpsfield Common*)
  • camping
  • taking animals other than dogs on to the land
  • having fires or barbecues
  • driving a vehicle (except mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs – no cars or motorbikes)

*The National Trust allows horse-riding and cycling on public bridleways or joint use byways. Motorised bikes or motorbikes/scramblers etc are not permitted.

Dogs on open access land – There are government rules regarding dogs on open access land, and these are in place for the benefit of other users and to protect local wildlife.

You must keep your dog on a lead, no more than 2 metres long on open access land:

  • between 1 March and 31 July – to protect ground-nesting birds
  • at all times around livestock, e.g. in the farmland around Ridlands Lane where cows and sheep roam in woodland areas as well as in the field.

Please do not let your dogs into the pond at Yalden Spring – see here for the reasons why

There may be other local or seasonal restrictions imposed by landowners.

Golf courses – are generally “excepted land” and on these, you should only use the public footpaths and bridleways, be courteous and mindful of golfers taking shots.

Do your bit to help preserve Limpsfield Common

We kindly ask that you abide by the rules of the common.

  • Please stick to the designated footpaths and bridleways
  • Keep your dog(s) in sight and under control at all times.
  • Always pick up your dog poo and put it in one of the bins (at each car park) – do not leave discarded bags in the undergrowth, by the path or hanging from trees!
  • If you see some litter, please pick it up and take it to a bin
  • Keep your dogs out of the pond and out of other fenced-off areas
  • If you see anything suspicious (anti-social behaviour, fires, fly-tipping, camping or barbecues), please report it to the local ranger straight away (see below) or police on 101 or via Tandridge Beat Facebook Page.

We now have a group of roaming rangers. They will usually be identified by their NT red sweatshirts. Thank you.
