Members Autumn Update – 2024

Dear Members, 

Thank you very much to those of you who were able to join the Annual Public Meeting this year. We appreciated your company and your questions and we hope you enjoyed the occasion. 

For those of you who were unable to join us we hope the information below gives you an update of the year, and a flavour of the activities that take place across the Common.

The National Trust and Taskforce has very busy on the common since last year.

Main activity since last year:

  • Installation of height barriers at car parks to help prevent fly-tipping and overnight camping
  • New notice boards and maps in all car parks
  • Bike pit management – restricting the scope / area while working with the young users
  • Woodland management – increasing sunlight and opening canopy to encourage native flora
  • Dead hedging and hurdles to preserve wildlife habitats
  • Footpath improvement of path from LC Cricket Pitch to High Chart car park
  • Yalden Spring conservation project- improving habitat, clearing the water and dead hedging for protection from dogs
  • Successful heathland scrapes to encourage more heather
  • New Saturday volunteer group started
  • Liaison with police to reduce anti-social behaviour in car parks

Ongoing activity: 

  • Continue to manage, maintain and improve footpaths over the winter including way markers and closing desire lines to improve habitat 
  • Liaison with local police re ASB in car parks and replacement of CCTV cameras
  • Management of Invasive Species, increasing sunlight and opening canopy to encourage native flora
  • Continued Yalden Spring improvements – aiming to achieve SSSI standards
  • Continuation of Heathland scrapes – to destroy the bracken and encourage heather, gorse, honeysuckle etc
