Dead Hedging on the High Chart

Our wonderful Task Force volunteers have now finished off the dead-hedge structure outside the High Chart Car Park. Thank you for a wonderful job, particularly in the heat!

All you need to know about dead hedging – a practice being employed in various places across the Chart and Limpsfield Common…

What’s dead hedging all about?

It serves multiple purposes; protecting the fenced off area from recreational pressures, reducing disturbance of the habitat for our woodland creatures and native plants, and heightening the walker’s perception of value of what lies either side of a footpath.

The structure also creates a great habitat for nesting or hunting birds, amphibians (particularly down by the pond), small mammals and eventually invertebrates as the structure breaks down over time.

This practice also allows us to use materials that we are extracting from the nearby woodlands themselves, and minimises the burning and movement of materials, keeping the material and nutrients on site, and effectively recycling a natural resource to protect more valuable areas.

Thank you for respecting the work we are doing on the Common and High Chart.
